Here’s another urban myth that keeps popping back up like a wack-a-mole: the American middle class is losing ground.
Nope, our latest monthly calculation of median income of households based on Census Bureau sample data through May 2026 puts the lie to that myth.
The median household income now stands at $87,000, an estimate that has less than a 1% margin of error. In most countries of the world an income of $87,000 would be fabulously rich.
After-inflation incomes took a hit during COVID and were stagnant under Biden, but under Trump they are on the rise again.
Also, real median income since 1984 has risen 41%. There are many problems in America, but no, our parents didn’t have it better than we do.
