The Washington Post and others reported this weekend that real wages for average Americans have been flat under Trump, and therefore the middle class is falling behind. Here’s the Post’s downer headline:
But as we pointed out on Friday, real median household INCOME is up a healthy $2,500 (or about $100 a month) since January 2025. Trump has recorded five times the gain in income in two years that Biden achieved in four years.

These numbers don’t include the $2,000 per family benefit of the Trump tax cut. If Democrats had had the majority in Congress, 2026 would have brought thousands of dollars in higher taxes for most American families. Ironically, these are the people who are running on “affordability.”
How can wages be flat while incomes are up?
The answer is that wages are only about two-thirds of average family income according to the Federal Reserve Board. Americans also get income from dividends, interest payments, rental income, stock sales (capital gains), pensions, gifts, etc.
The booming economy and stock market has increased almost all of these non-wage forms of money income.
So why does the media ignore this good news story and paint a false picture three weeks before an election?
