The Brit’s Just Can’t Seem to Heal Thyselves

Britain suffers from economic growth below 1% a year, capital flight, concerns about “woke” government policy and a rising crime rate.

None of that is likely to improve under Andy Burnham, the new Labour Party Prime Minister who replaced Keir Starmer on Monday. He’s the 7th prime minister in 10 years who seemingly wants to try everything EXCEPT the free market.

Worse, his speech to Labour Party members last week was an attack on Margaret Thatcher’s freedom reforms as “a series of wrong turns.”

Burnham promised “the most significant change moment in our politics for 40 years,” including a possible rent freeze and raising the top rate of income tax to 50%.  He claimed that under Thatcher the country had “surrendered control of the essentials – housing, water, energy, transport – and left people exposed to higher costs.”

Of course, that completely ignores how state ownership and union control had turned pre-Thatcher Britain into “the sick man of Europe.”

What is most troubling is that Burnham wants to push through a radical agenda with no popular mandate – he was selected as Prime Minister by the votes of a few hundred Labor Party hacks.  Polls show Nigel Farage’s Reform Party leads in the polls, but the next election isn’t scheduled for another three years.

Burnham describes his philosophy as “business-friendly socialism” – a contradiction in terms if we ever heard one.
